Medical Weight Loss
Medical weight loss does not rely on diet pills, fads, or surgery. Instead, it is weight management based on scientific evidence that focuses on the root causes of weight gain and obesity.
What is medical weight loss?
Medical weight loss does not rely on diet pills, fads, or surgery. Instead, it is weight management based on scientific evidence that focuses on the root causes of weight gain and obesity. Our very own Dr. Ellen K. Stehouwer is a board certified bariatric physician who approaches obesity/overweight as a chronic disease. Our approach to weight loss is multidimensional (focusing on nutritional, metabolic/biochemical, psychological and behavioral aspects) and relies on state of the art diagnostics. Since obesity is a chronic disease, we work with our patients to help them lose weight and maintain their results.*
What can I expect when I make an appointment?
As a medical practice, Kitsap Medical Weight Loss is on the cutting edge of obesity medicine. Dr. Stehouwer is the only board certified bariatric physician in the entire West Sound region. Our process is unique because we want to establish a doctor/patient relationship that is always tailored to your individual situation. Our approach includes:
- A medical history
- Physical exam
- A complete body composition scan
- Several lab tests
- An EKG (only for some patients)
- An educational session in a group setting
- A private consultation with Dr. Stehouwer
This will all occur during your first visit, which usually lasts 2.5-3 hours. Medications are dispensed at the end of the visit, if they are prescribed at the office. These medications are just an extra tool to help in the weight loss process.* Any follow-up appointments are scheduled monthly and usually last 30 minutes, depending on your status.
Am I a candidate?
Anyone with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher can benefit from medical weight loss.* Having said that, BMI does not paint the whole picture of being overweight or obese. Many professional athletes have a BMI higher than 30, as muscle can skew the results. Using the SECA body composition scanner allows us to know how much lean muscle your body has and where it’s distributed.* By adding a waist measurement to the process, we can determine how much visceral fat is inside your abdomen.* You may also be a candidate if you experience other weight-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, acid reflux or even urinary incontinence.*
