Everyone from our mothers to our doctor to the news reporter on TV tells us to live a healthier life. But what does that mean and why should we care? See a few ways you can improve your overall health below, starting today!

Some areas we can focus on improving include our physical, mental, emotional or spiritual health. Each of these four areas of our life is just as important as the others. When one area is neglected, all the areas suffer. Research has also shown that choosing a healthy lifestyle prolongs life.

Let’s talk about the “E” word. Regular exercise helps with weight loss and maintenance by increasing our metabolic needs and decreasing our blood sugar. It also improves mood and thought processing and decreases stress levels by releasing endorphins, feel-good hormones, from our brain. Exercise should include activity that goes above-and-beyond your normal daily physical activity and include both activities that increase your heart rate and resistance training to prevent muscle loss.

Another “E” word that has a significant impact on our wellbeing is eating. Avoiding sugar, refined carbohydrates and processed foods will improve mood, decrease inflammation in the body, and literally slow the aging process. Eating the right foods allows our body to stay healthy, heal more easily and boosts energy.

Smoking – don’t do it! If you need help quitting, talk to your primary care provider today. There is now evidence that no amount of alcohol is good for you, but one recommendation is no more than one drink a day for women of all ages and men over 65; for men younger than 65 no more than two drinks a day.

Spending time with others improves our mood and cognition. Spend time with others regularly (if not daily), whether it’s with family or friends, volunteering or being involved in a club.

Spirituality is the way we find meaning, hope, comfort, and inner peace in our life. The word “spiritual” refers to your innermost self. It provides us with a sense of who we are, where we came from, where we’re going and how we might reach our goals. Identify activities in your life that contribute to these feelings and begin spending time each day practicing them. (Maybe you will choose to do community service or volunteer somewhere. Perhaps you will pray, meditate, sing, attend religious services or read inspirational books. Others may take walks, spend time thinking in quiet, or do yoga.) Spiritually healthy people are hopeful, have meaningful relationships with others, and able to forgive and love themselves.

Be sure to get enough good quality sleep. Poor or little sleep affects our mood and, over time, our health. A few quick tips on sleep: stick to a time schedule and routine whenever possible, even on the weekends; don’t nap; designate your bedroom as an area for sleep only, so no screen-time of any kind especially right before bed and first thing when you wake up.
