How Kitsap Medical Weight Loss saved my life
I have struggled with obesity all my adult life. I have had a very unhealthy relationship with food for a very long time.
I have struggled with obesity all my adult life. I have had a very unhealthy relationship with food for a very long time. I am a food addict. I would eat when I was sad, stressed, bored etc. My diet was full of sugar, fast food and junk food. Repeated attempts to lose weight ended in short-term gains but no long-term result. I had tried it all, low fat, low carb, exercise routines and even prescription medication. Some worked better than others but none of them resulted in long-term results.
Two years ago, January of 2016 I was at a new low. At just under 6’ tall I weighed in at 315lbs. My doctor warned me that if I did not make some changes my quality of life was going to rapidly deteriorate.
My quality of life was already suffering. I had low energy, relied on sugar and caffeine to get me through the day and was very unhappy with how I looked and my physical stamina. I had nerve pain, joint pain, back pain. Like many times before I resolved to make a change. I reduced my food intake and made better choices. I gained some traction and lost around 55lbs over the course of the next 6 months.
Unfortunately, that summer there were some traumatic events in my life and soon I was back to my old habits. Over the next year, I gained weight and was edging closer to the 280 mark. My cycle of initial results but no long-term sustainable weight loss happened yet again. I was very discouraged.
September of 2017, my doctor told me that I was 1-2 years away from full-blown diabetes. After talking about my struggles, he referred me to Kitsap Medical Weight Loss. The next month on October 20th, 2017, I went to my first appointment with Dr. Stehouwer. I weighed in around 275lbs wearing 44-46” pants and XXL to almost XXXL shirts. The staff at Kitsap Medical Weight Loss performed a thorough medical evaluation and talked to me about my food struggles, existing medical issues and came up with a plan to get me on track. This was a combination of an appetite suppressant, vitamins and supplements, and a low carb “keto” style diet. Except this was not a “diet” this was to be a permanent lifestyle change.
With monthly visits, guidance and encouragement, over the last year I have lost about 80lbs, weigh under 200lbs for the first time in my adult life and I feel like I have control over food, not the other way around. The low carb lifestyle has had a dramatic impact on my energy level and ability to cope with stress. I have much more confidence both at work and in social settings, I have been able to excel at work helping our company grow by double-digit margins this year. I was even able to stick to the program through the loss of a family member and other life events that would have normally derailed me. My pants size
is 32-34, I fit in medium to large shirts and have reduced the number of chins on my face to one.
The big difference from previous attempts was professional guidance and accountability. Dr. Stehouwer showed me the dramatic effects that the weight loss was having on my health, the lowered blood sugar, the risk of Diabetes and heart disease going way down. My blood pressure is 110/75 and I have virtually no joint pain. After about a month of the diet, the cravings for sugar and junk food went away and I don’t even miss them. Like any addict, I don’t think I will ever be “cured” however I have many tools to help me maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that my visits and the financial investment I made at Kitsap Medical Weight Loss saved my life. At the very least they helped me regain a much higher quality of life. Allowing me to be a better husband and provider for my family.
Like anything worth doing, it is hard work, and you get out of the program what you put into it. But if you stick with the program and follow their advice and encouragement you will see results that have a VERY meaningful impact on your health.
