What is high cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is found in lipids (fats) in the blood. Your body needs cholesterol in order to continually build healthy cells, but having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease. With high cholesterol, fatty deposits may develop in your blood vessels. Over time, these deposits will make it difficult for sufficient blood to flow through your arteries. As a result, your heart may not get as much oxygen-rich blood as it needs, increasing the risk of a heart attack. If blood flow to the brain decreases, it can cause a stroke. Your higher cholesterol may be inherited, but often it stems from unhealthy lifestyle choices. The good news is, this condition is both preventable and treatable.* Regular exercise, a healthy diet and weight loss medication can go a long way toward reducing high cholesterol.*

High cholesterol and obesity

High cholesterol and obesity have a strong connection. Having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater puts you at risk of high cholesterol. Eating trans fats (found in cookies and crackers) can raise your cholesterol level. If you are a man with a waist circumference of at least 40 inches (102 centimeters) or a woman with a waist circumference of at least 35 inches (89 centimeters), your risk is increased. The combination of high cholesterol and obesity is also linked to diabetes. High blood sugar contributes to an increase in bad cholesterol and can damage the lining of your arteries.

I highly recommend a visit to Kitsap Medical Weight Loss for help with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight! I am truly impressed with this clinic’s wonderful, caring team, and am so thankful that Kitsap County now has a board certified Bariatric doctor! Dr. Stehouwer is the one to see whether you are a little or a lot overweight. She educates, supports and provides the tools with a diet that can easily be followed with, of course, some patient dedication! It is now my diet for life after losing 10 lbs in the first month, 45 total after appx 7 months. The entire staff is equally excited about each patient’s success, they truly care and as well they “practice what they preach” … the entire team follows the same diet. Dr. Stehouwer cares about you at a personal level. I always appreciate how she takes time to talk with me about how I am feeling and that she cares about me as a whole, not just a person on a diet. She has the knowledge and skill pertaining to weight loss that the Family Practice doctor doesn’t have, and the plan works. Thank you Dr. Stehouwer and Staff, you are great!*
